Social Media Blogging with SEO in mind

January 8th, 2010

Joker Media Search Engine OptimizationThere is a lot of white noise on the Internet. Someone may write all the blogs they like, but are they getting noticed? For most businesses, unless you are using the right words the blogs may not gain any exposure outside of your inner network. That it not the purpose of social media . You want all of your social media to expand your audience. Blogging and writing with search engine optimization techniques in mind may be your most effective approach.

First off, have you determined the key words before you start blogging? It may just be white noise without them. Do you know the how frequent you should be using them. Unless people are rushing to your blogs like just a few major players, your best chance of using a blog to your benefit is to use them to provide link juice or linking power for your site. That way if just a few people read them, you will not have wasted your time  as you are still getting some benefit from them as at least search engines are picking up your main themes.

If you are using social media without knowing search engine optimization techniques, you might just be blending in with all the white noise.

Why SEO is a lot like today’s TV Weatherman

November 16th, 2009

People are perplexed when I use this analogy- but it really describes SEO to those who arent familiar with it. TV meteorologists look at lots of different data when predicting if it will rain or not.  The chart pressure systems, barometer, winds, what is happening elsewhere or on the horizon. In short, they say “we feel the conditions are in place that it will rain”   They are pretty good at predicting it, but not always right .  In SEO , no one knows for sure that something will result in making it rain in first page search engine results. However, we try to prepare the conditions so it will rain. We look at fundamental truths in SEO practices such as silo design, content, wording, links, etc. These are foundations. We also look at what everyone else is doing and what respond with a competitive strategy. Weather people do not buy a forecast, and in turn, good SEO should  not depend on the practice of buying links. Joker Media practices sound, honest fundamentals for SEO in Minneapolis and Tucson that we feel have a very good chance of making it rain for you.

Even websites need love sometimes.

November 13th, 2009

Your company has a website.  Check.  Having a presence online is great, but keeping your site up-to-date is the key to generating business and retaining your current customer base.   It can be as simple as changing a picture on your main page or updating your welcome statement.  Not only does updating your site show the customer that you are proactive, but search engines also pick up on the changes.  Updating the site layout and design should be completed every 3 or 4 years, but not so extreme it seems like a completely new business.

Even if you don’t have much content to update there are some simple tricks that you can do and the good part is you are brave enough you can do them for free.

Blog
Install a blog on your site.  Wordpress has a blog that you can install without any programming knowledge.  Blogs can be about anything.  If you do HVAC, write about the weather.  A lawyer could write about news stories.   You can put a box on your home page that updates everytime you write a new post.  Check out Joker Media’s home page and see how it works.  Free.

Facebook
Create a facebook Page or Group and add events or links or pictures or whatever you want.  You can then link to it from your website.  Update the event on Facebook and promote it on your website.  You can also place a link on your Facebook Group or Page to your website.  It’s easy and free.

Twitter
The newest social tool and the oddest.  Create a Twitter account for your business and post links or other comments.  You can post tweets from your phone or computer, so while on the road or in the office.  You can follow other companies or friends and they can stay up to date of your happenings.  Fast and free.

Of course if you don’t have the time to do these or just aren’t confident enough to take care of it.  Joker Media would be happy to help and do them for you.  Check out more information on our Social Media Relations page.

Don’t forget about your website, because it’s the first thing your customers see and first impressions are the most important.

iPhone or Blackberry?

October 21st, 2009
The Great Geek Debate

The Great Geek Debate

It’s an age old debate…okay, maybe not that old. But it’s a great debate at the very least. What’s better, the iPhone or the Blackberry?

There are many smartphones out there - maybe you have the HTC powered by Google’s Android mobile OS. You may use the Pre - the new release from Palm.  Nokia has a boatload of options as well.

Many will tell you that the Blackberry is excellent for email setup, business documents and the interface is very user-friendly. I hear many people say it’s great for people with a “business mind”.

The iPhone, on the other hand, boasts their app store - thousands upon thousands of applications (many free) that, some say, make everyday tasks  easier, more fun and downright interesting. People have demanded the iPhone is for those with an “artistic mind”.

Well, we’re a little biased at Joker Media. As of late, the entire Joker Media staff is exclusively iPhone. Even our PCer’s have an iPhone. We’re happy with the iPhone and there are few complaints, although AT&T can be aggravating in some locales.

Keep in mind, even if you rock the iPhone or the Blackberry, Joker Media’s email works seamlessly with both. We can even help you get set up so you’re always getting your email where you are…but, ah…that’s not always a great experience. Consider that your warning. It can be quite addicting to check your email a zillion times a day. I’m guilty.

If you’re on the fence about an iPhone or Blackberry and would like some more information about the pros and cons of both, check out this article by Curtis Silver of Wired. He’s got it down.

Enjoy your iPhone…er, your smartphone.

SEO worth every penny

October 1st, 2009

I recently did a conference call with reporters from New York including some prominent writers for the New York Times.  Asked how they start their research and work on stories, each replied they do a general search engine query using a few keywords and start with some of the first page results.

We’re not talking about the paid ads that appear at the top of search engine results page (SERP.)

Journalists, just like the public, value the “organic” results, the sites that pop up in the areas outside the paid results and perceive them as more of an independent judgment. The only way to get a good organic search results is with Search Engine Optimization (SEO.) A good strategy makes sure your site has the proper programming, has the right keywords emphasized numerous times in your content, and has good , quality links to it.

When I asked the Journalists if they thought Search Engine Optimization was a worthy investment for companies, all the journalists replied “a great investment that is worth every penny.”

Links from News Organizations are huge SEO factors

October 1st, 2009

It used to be companies wanted to be on the news or in the paper solely for the consumer audience. Today, there is a huge added benefit. Often times the news outlet will provide a link to your website that provides benefits for a long time.

Wonder how search engines like google view sites for their ranking? Labels for your website pages, the words on your pages and links to your site. No link is more important than a link from an independent news organization. It shows you are legitimate, that you have something to offer that is new, different or insightful.

It’s not always the number of links you have to your site (part of the reason we do not advocate buying links.)  Instead, its the quality of the links. I’ve seen sites shoot up in the rankings and the only thing that had changed was the company got national news coverage that also linked to their site.

If your website design company or SEO firm does not have a PR arm that specializes in getting your organization or company news coverage and those important links, you are missing the boat.

Content versus Clean

October 1st, 2009

Everyone has an opinion. Some users go to a site and want few words and just a visual guide to find where they have to go. Others are using the site for a volume of information and for researching the website owner or company. What is the right answer?

It depends on what the purpose of your site is. Some sites exist as a showcase for qualities. Others exist strickly as ecommerce or to make a quick sale.

But face it, very few places are able to turn a quick sale on line. Most for-profit businesses have background information on how you can facilitate a sale for the future. But how are users finding those sites? That is where the words play a major role.

It is a pretty accepted practice that search engines have a more preferable rating for sites with larger volumes of written information. A common held theory is about 450 words per page. In those words, key phrases you think people will type into a search engine need to be placed near the start of the words at least a couple of times, one in the middle and twice at the end of the written copy.

But few people can make 450 words on a page visually appealing. The answer is creativity. Breaking up the words into seperate sections or with subheader titles.

It is a constant tug of war between content people and graphic design people. Who is right? Your traffic levels and conversions into sales will tell you.

Image is everything. In today’s world a website is your image.

October 1st, 2009

Often times you hear business owners or managers say “we really dont need a website” or “our site, even though it’s old, is just fine.”

However, in today’s world, people you dont even see or come in contact with are judging you. Their opinions are often based on what they see on your website. Your site reveals how your do business.

If you have a visually attractive site that has a good deal of valuable content explaining how you do business it tells the user that you take the time to make things right. You pay attention to detail and care enough that you want to share your history with the user.

Search Engines also value a site with a good deal of content. A site with a lot of information tells the search engine that you have taken the time to compile a resource. Again, your image projected to the search engines is that you are thorough and complete, so often the search engines will rank you higher.

I’m reminded by the term, perception is reality, and with a website it could not be more true.
