Your Web site is now your website

June 2nd, 2010

According to The Associated Press and their recent release of their 2010 Stylebook, the term “Web site” has now officially been changed to “website”.

According to Darrell Christian, AP editor-at-large, “In making the change, the Stylebook team considered responses from our staff as well as readers and users of the Stylebook. It was clear that website has become the widely accepted usage.”

Well that settles it.  I guess I can now sleep at night knowing Joker Media is in the business of developing websites not Web sites.  Does this mean I have to go through every site we ever built and update Web site to website.  Probably not.  ”Web” still remains capitalized when referring to the World Wide Web, so in theory you can still use Web site.

So why does the AP have a book detailing spelling of words?  In 1953, the AP, changed the way they transmitted their news and needed a consistency of writing with their worldwide editorial staff.  The first book, which contained 60 pages, has now grown to over 400 pages.  The book is now release annually due to the fact of the introduction of new words.

Blue-Ray, lol, rofl, app, retweet, friend, unfriend, RSS, metadata are just some of the new entries to the book.  The new entries are determined by AP staff and outside suggestions before becoming official.

I would like to offer some suggestions.  How about Jokered.  Jokered (n) - To have your company’s website designed or upgraded by Joker Media. “Tu Nidito, you have officially been jokered!”

You can study up on your terminology for a mere $18.95 or get an online subscription to get all releases as they come.  News organizations are offered a cheaper rate at $11.75 for the second straight year.

Does your website need a search feature?

May 20th, 2010

Joker Media Search Feature SolutionsWe’ve had a few clients request to have a search feature built into their website. Many companies just assume it’s a good idea. But it can actually work against you when it’s not necessary. Many companies are looking for a basic 5-page website that spotlights their basic services, about the company, a contact page, etc. This type of website allows for very little content. It’s more of a “storefront” for the company or organization. Having a search feature could only frustrate a user when they type in a word only to find minimal and confusing search results.

So are you confused on if you need one or not? We like to ask a few questions before tackling the programming - and we found a good resource outlining six questions in Search Engine Land:

  • Are the results relevant?
  • Do you have the resources required to run and maintain the site search?
  • Does your site search vendor give you control?
  • Can you repurpose data from search?
  • Does your search solution constantly improve?
  • Can you measure site search performance?

Joker Media can help you answer these questions and program a search feature in your page that will not only deliver the most pertinent results, but will minimize frustration for your new users - who, we can assume, you’d like to have return to your website.

Is your company “Facebooking”?

May 14th, 2010

facebook-logo More and more companies and organizations are hearing rumblings about this "Facebook" phenomenon. Well, if you’re a business owner or a leader in an organization and have been living under a rock for a few years, it’s time to rise, stretch and join the madness.

Facebook is an online social network that seems to have connected the world to themselves. Need the proof?

  • More than 400 million active users
  • 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day
  • Average user has 130 friends
  • People spend over 500 billion minutes per month on Facebook
  • More than 70 translations available on the site
  • About 70% of Facebook users are outside the United States
  • Over 300,000 users helped translate the site through the translations application

Enough of the statistics, you get the idea. Chances are, your competitors are on Facebook and they’re reaching an audience that may have been untapped until recent years. Facebook is free to use, it allows you to promote yourself and your services for free and allows you to update information as often as you want.

Even members of Congress are on Facebook! Senators aren’t normally the ones who lead the technological frontier. Case in point. Check out this post in PC Magazine :

"More than 300 members of Congress use Facebook in an official capacity to communicate and connect with their constituents and we’re excited showcase some of the most innovative uses of our platform on Capitol Hill," Tim Sparapani, Facebook’s public policy director, said in a statement. "We hope this will encourage even more use of social technologies like Facebook by politicians and government agencies to interact with and serve their constituents."

If Facebook makes your nervous or if you need a little primer about how it all works, we’d more than happy to help. Joker Media has helped several companies and organizations get a Facebook profile quickly and painlessly. We’ll teach you who to use it and before you know it, you’ll be "friending" your customers and posting the latest in your "status" regarding your company, your product or what you had for lunch that day.

Is your website fat?

May 11th, 2010

Joker Media and your Fat WebsiteThere’s a pretty good entry in the Search Engine Journal about comparing Search Engine Optimization to the famous NBC television show The Biggest Loser.

Makes sense…

“Almost certainly, the website will be fat, out of shape, and will require work, whether through link building (working out), or on-site optimization (diet and lifestyle). If things were working out great and the person had great control of their site or their SEO services, they wouldn’t be contacting you, the personal trainer.”

Joker Media can help you optimize your website - but many clients want the changes to occur overnight. They know they need to move up in the rankings, but without the proper “exercise” that just isn’t realistic.

“The process takes a long time. SEO is not a quick fix. While we can make some quick, immediate changes to a website (diet and lifestyle), it takes long term commitment to link building (exercise) and maintenance of the website to get to our ideal image, which is a front page rankings. Hopefully, these front page rankings will convert traffic into customers (dates!).”

Social Media Blogging with SEO in mind

January 8th, 2010

Joker Media Search Engine OptimizationThere is a lot of white noise on the Internet. Someone may write all the blogs they like, but are they getting noticed? For most businesses, unless you are using the right words the blogs may not gain any exposure outside of your inner network. That it not the purpose of social media . You want all of your social media to expand your audience. Blogging and writing with search engine optimization techniques in mind may be your most effective approach.

First off, have you determined the key words before you start blogging? It may just be white noise without them. Do you know the how frequent you should be using them. Unless people are rushing to your blogs like just a few major players, your best chance of using a blog to your benefit is to use them to provide link juice or linking power for your site. That way if just a few people read them, you will not have wasted your time  as you are still getting some benefit from them as at least search engines are picking up your main themes.

If you are using social media without knowing search engine optimization techniques, you might just be blending in with all the white noise.

Why SEO is a lot like today’s TV Weatherman

November 16th, 2009

People are perplexed when I use this analogy- but it really describes SEO to those who arent familiar with it. TV meteorologists look at lots of different data when predicting if it will rain or not.  The chart pressure systems, barometer, winds, what is happening elsewhere or on the horizon. In short, they say “we feel the conditions are in place that it will rain”   They are pretty good at predicting it, but not always right .  In SEO , no one knows for sure that something will result in making it rain in first page search engine results. However, we try to prepare the conditions so it will rain. We look at fundamental truths in SEO practices such as silo design, content, wording, links, etc. These are foundations. We also look at what everyone else is doing and what respond with a competitive strategy. Weather people do not buy a forecast, and in turn, good SEO should  not depend on the practice of buying links. Joker Media practices sound, honest fundamentals for SEO in Minneapolis and Tucson that we feel have a very good chance of making it rain for you.
